The Department of Finance Canada has released updated information on tariff relief and remission available to Canadian businesses affected by Canada’s counter-tariffs on certain U.S. imports.
For Pets Canada members importing products, ingredients, manufacturing inputs, machinery or other goods from the United States, it may be worthwhile to review whether your imports are subject to Canada’s counter-tariffs and, if so, whether tariff relief may be available.
Existing remission measures are available for certain eligible imports, including qualifying goods used in Canadian manufacturing and other specified activities. Some relief is available automatically where the eligibility requirements are met, meaning an individual remission request to the Department of Finance may not be required. Importers are responsible for confirming eligibility and maintaining the required documentation.
Businesses may also qualify for product-specific remission for certain goods. Where existing relief is not available, businesses may be able to request exceptional remission, including in situations where required inputs cannot reasonably be sourced in Canada or from non-U.S. suppliers.

Members should work with their customs broker or trade professional to confirm the tariff classification of their goods and whether a particular relief measure applies. Questions regarding remission can also be directed to the Department of Finance at remissions-remises@fin.gc.ca.
Pets Canada will continue to monitor Canada-U.S. trade developments and share information relevant to the pet industry as it becomes available.
