Pets Canada is closely monitoring the latest tariff developments in the United States and their potential impact on Canada’s pet industry.

The U.S. administration has announced an additional 50% tariff on a select list of Canadian goods, including certain dog collars, leashes, harnesses and related animal equipment. The new tariffs are currently scheduled to take effect on August 19, 2026.

For reference, the affected list includes:

  • HTSUS 4201.00.30: Dog leashes, collars, muzzles, harnesses and similar dog equipment, of any material
  • HTSUS 4201.00.60: Other saddlery and harnesses for animals

Businesses exporting these types of products to the United States should confirm the classification of their goods with their customs broker.

As we have seen throughout the ongoing trade discussions, these measures may be amended, delayed or withdrawn before they come into effect. Pets Canada will continue working with our government relations partners and monitoring developments closely. We will provide members with further information as it becomes available and the potential implications for our industry become clearer.
